LIST INFORMATION FOR
CYBERIA-L@LISTSERV.AOL.COM

The CYBERIA-L list was started by Professor Trotter Hardy of the William and Mary School of Law to foster a discussion of the law and policy of computer communications among legal scholars, practitioners, students, and other interested parties. The list is administered by Ray Everett-Church, an attorney and privacy consultant in San Jose, California. Access to the e-mail addresses of subscribers is limited to the owner, his assistant, and the administrator of the Listserver. The list is not available to anyone else and may not be used for any other purposes.

Distribution of commercial messages on this list is prohibited, although a brief announcement of conferences or events related to the list topic are permitted. If you want to post something but aren't sure it's on topic, please ask the CYBERIA-L administrator or owner first. Otherwise you may unintentionally violate the norms of list policy and practice.

HOW TO JOIN THE LIST

To join the list, send an email message to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.AOL.COM, with the contents of the message reading:

SUBSCRIBE CYBERIA-L YourFirstName YourLastName

for example:

SUBSCRIBE CYBERIA-L Winston Churchill

You do *not* need to type your email address; the LISTSERV will capture your email address from the "From:" header on your email. Because of that fact, however, your email must come "From:" the *exact* address that you will use to interface with the list hereafter. If your "From:" address ever changes, you may experience difficulty posting to the list, adjusting your list subscription settings, or unsubscribing from the list. To change your subscription email address, please see "GOT A NEW EMAIL ADDRESS?" below.

HOW TO SEND (AND NOT SEND) MAIL TO THE LIST

To send a message to all the people currently subscribed to the list, just send mail to CYBERIA-L@LISTSERV.AOL.COM. This is called "sending mail to the list." When you do that, your single message is duplicated by the LISTSERV and delivered to each of the people subscribed to the list. This address (CYBERIA-L@LISTSERV.AOL.COM) is also called the "list address."

You must never try to send any command to that address, as it would be distributed to all the people who have subscribed and then they'll know you don't know what you're doing and you won't be invited to play in any reindeer games.

All commands must be sent to the "LISTSERV address," LISTSERV@LISTSERV.AOL.COM. It is very important to understand the difference between the two, but fortunately it is not complicated. All commands go in the body of the message; the subject line is always ignored.

TOO MUCH MAIL FROM THE LIST? TRY THE DIGEST

Instead of many email messages every day, you may have LISTSERV send you a "DIGEST" of each day's mail in one large message. You may switch to to DIGEST mode by sending an email to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.AOL.COM, with the contents of the message reading:

SET CYBERIA-L DIGEST

HOW TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THE LIST

Had enough? You may leave the list at any time by sending an email to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.AOL.COM, with the contents of the message reading:

SIGNOFF CYBERIA-L

GOT A NEW EMAIL ADDRESS?

To change your email address, you must still be able to send mail from your old address (this can sometimes be most easily accomplished by just changing the "From" email address in your email client software).

To register a change from an old address to a new one, the new address must also be functioning, otherwise you will not be able to confirm the change.

So, with that said, here's how to change your subscription address. Using your *old* email address, send an email to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.AOL.COM, with the contents of the message reading:

CHANGE CYBERIA-L your-new-email-address

for example:

CHANGE CYBERIA-L winston.churchill@newjob.example.com

If you cannot send email from your old email address, you will need to send an email to CYBERIA-L-Request@LISTSERV.AOL.COM explaining this and ask the list administrator for assistance. This may take some time to accomplish, so please *try* to change your address for yourself first.

GOING ON VACATION?

Please Note! If you go on vacation and your automated "I'm on vacation until Monday" message gets sent to the list, your subscription may be terminated in order to preserve the sanity of the rest of the list subscribers. Therefore, to temporarily suspend list mail, send an email to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.AOL.COM, with the contents of the message reading:

SET CYBERIA-L NOMAIL

When you're back from vacation, send an email to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.AOL.COM, with the contents of the message reading:

SET CYBERIA-L MAIL (to turn on individual messages again)

or

SET CYBERIA-L DIGEST (to turn on daily digest mode again)

HOW TO GET MORE HELP ON USING LISTSERV LISTS

If you are unable to find the answers to your questions on this page or via the LISTSERV Reference Card, please send your inquiry to:

CYBERIA-L-Request@LISTSERV.AOL.COM

Your message will be distributed to the Owner and the Administratorh for the list; one of them will respond to you as soon as possible.

A NOTE ON ARCHIVES

The owner of CYBERIA-L does not, as a general matter, permit anyone to create or maintain archives of past Cyberia-L messages. Permission has, however, been granted to LawJournalExtra (http://www.ljextra.com), Findmail.com (http://www.findmail.com), and Cornell University. Those sites allow subscribers to prevent their mail from being archived, for those who wish. Please see those sites for instructions on how to avoid having your messages archived if that interests you.

If other sites are maintaining archives of the CYBERIA-L messages, they are doing so without the knowledge or permission of the list owner. If you find such a site, please let us know.
