America's Internet Disconnect, Wash Post, 11/8/2006
America's record in expanding broadband communication
is so poor that it should be viewed as an outrage by
every consumer and businessperson in the country. Too
few of us have broadband connections, and those who do
pay too much for service that is too slow. It's
hurting our economy, and things are only going to get
worse if we don't do something about it.

Having Our Lame Ducks in a Row, Public Knowledge,
11/8/2006
The lame duck session of the current Congress starts
on Monday, and the gains made by Democrats yesterday
in the next Congress could well effect what happens on
broadband and digital copyright issues in that
session. So here is what to look out for next week
(and perhaps also the week after Thanksgiving):

House Democrats and the Internet, Telecom Agenda, IP
Democracy, 11/8/2006
The Democrats now control the House of Representatives
for the first time since 1994 and the complexion of
Internet and telecom-related policy and legislative
matters will change, perhaps dramatically. Republican
control of the Congress has been so entrenched that
the Democrats have played mostly defense for well over
a decade and its hard to envision what the shape of a
more proactive Democratic telecom and Internet
legislative agenda might be

List of the 13 Internet enemies in 2006 published,
RSF, 11/8/2006
Three countries - Nepal, Maldives and Libya - have
been removed from the annual list of Internet enemies,
which Reporters Without Borders publishes today. But
many bloggers were harassed and imprisoned this year
in Egypt, so it has been added to the roll of shame
reserved for countries that systematically violate
online free expression.

Big Employer is Watching, Cybertelecom, 11/8/2006
Recently there was a great deal of excitement over a
military case, US v. Long, that found that an employee
had an expectation of privacy in her email. Finding an
expectation of privacy, the court concluded that the
reading of the defendant's email was in violation of
the 4th Amendment and surpressed the emails as
evidence. The problem in this case is the facts.

German Supreme Court Says ISPs Should Delete Logs When
Asked, Techdirt, 11/8/2006
As the ongoing battle continues between those fighting
for better privacy protection from ISPs against those
who want more data retention, it looks like the German
Supreme Court has sided with the privacy side. The
debate is one that's gone on for a few years (more in
Europe than in the US, though we've been trying to
catch up lately). Certain government officials want
ISPs to store log file data for a very long period of
time -- much longer than is needed for any business
purpose.
