Iraq Gets Wimax - Deployed by IRAQTEL, Broadband
Reports, 11/21/2006
Iraq is set to receive its first Wimax network,
according to Portal Iraq. Using Redline gear, the
network will first see deployment in Basrah by IRAQTEL
with slow expansion thereafter. "IRAQTEL has been
searching for a WIMAX solution that would provide a
cost-effectively alternative to VSAT networks, which
have been the only available solution for establishing
broadband connections because of the lack of copper
line infrastructure," says IRAQTEL Chairman Sheikh
Fawzi Al Lami. As we've previously noted, the
connectivity options in Iraq are not so hot.

A modest look at WiMAX, Telephony, 11/21/2006
The non-stop drumbeat of WiMAX hype is promising some
pretty unreasonable things, at least unreasonable in
the near future. From promises of a DSL connection you
can bring anywhere to predictions of mobile
broadband-enabled iPods and video cameras, WiMAX is
setting its potential customers up for disappointment.
So it's refreshing to see AT&T, among all of that
clamoring, take a more subdued approach

One week's time, two takes on Section 230 immunity,
Internet Cases, 11/21/2006
In the past week, two important courts, the U.S.
District Court for the Northern District of Illinois,
and the Supreme Court of California, have issued
opinions examining the contours of the immunity
provided under the Communications Decency Act at 47
U.S.C. 230. That section provides, among other things,
that "[n]o provider or user of any interactive
computer service shall be treated as the publisher or
speaker of any information provided by another
information content provider." Although both cases
were defense victories, the two courts gave different
treatment to Section 230 in their reading of the
statute and in their interpretation of the leading
case on point.

Port 25/TCP Blocks a Net Neutrality Issue? - Can basic
security counter-measures be considered such?,
Techdirt, 11/21/2006
Port 25/tcp is used for SMTP, the outgoing mail
protocol, and is often blocked by ISPs to cut down on
spam (whether intentional or due to infection). The
block prevents users from sending outgoing mail via
any third party mail-hosting services.

CDT Releases "Lame Duck" Internet Watch List, CDT,
11/21/2006
CDT on Monday issued a special lame duck edition of
its "Internet Watch List," which identifies seven
legislative efforts that threaten the Internet and
fundamental civil liberties in the waning days of the
109th Congress. Unfortunately bills that would greatly
expand the authority to wiretap innocent Americans;
stifle socially valuable speech online; and limit
access to worthwhile social networking tools remain
very much in play despite the short legislative
calendar. CDT is urging lawmakers, journalists and
activists to remain vigilant to ensure that none of
these misguided measures becomes law.
