FTTH Con: How the price of PON will fall, Telephony,
10/6/2006
Though optics make passive optical network (PON)
gear--the most widely deployed fiber-to-the-premises
(FTTP) technology in the U.S.--significantly more
expensive than DSL, PON costs will follow the path of
DSL equipment costs downward, according to Dan
Parsons, marketing director for chip maker Broadlight,
who addressed a crowd at the Fiber-to-the-Home
Conference in Las Vegas on Wednesday

"Unlimited" Broadband, I Cringely, 10/6/2006
How much Internet service is "unlimited" Internet
service? If you are a user of Verizon Wireless's
Broadband Access wireless Internet service,
"unlimited" means five gigabytes per month or less.
The company is quite specific in its advertisements
that the service is for unlimited e-mail, web surfing,
and corporate intranet use, but not for downloading
music or videos or running servers.

The Power of YouTube Video in Net Neutrality Fight, IP
Democracy, 10/6/2006
Courtesy of the 463, this article by Daniel Reilly in
Salon gives a longish look at the net neutrality
issue. Although it plays up pro-net neutrality
advocates as a “rag-tag army of grass-roots” soliders
(as opposed to the cable industry, which claims it was
“born of a rag-tag group of dreamers”), it’s a pretty
balanced recap of the debate so far.

Media conglomerates threaten Internet neutrality,
Polytechnic Online, 10/6/2006
We all take for granted the freedom that the internet
gives us to access any piece of information, ranging
from the smallest website to the largest. Most
importantly, we take for granted the freedom it gives
us to share our opinions.

Law Is Unlikely to Corral
Internet Gambling, WSJ, 10/6/2006
Last week's passage of a federal law to explicitly
restrict Internet gambling -- a ban on using banks,
credit cards and online money transfers to pass money
between bettor and "unlawful" gambling site -- shows
how tricky regulating the Internet can be.

P: Randal C. Picker , Who Should Regulate Entry into
IPTV and Municipal Wireless?, SSRN, 10/6/2006
We are at an unusual moment in telecommunications. We
have two very live cases of entry: Internet protocol
television (IPTV) and municipal wireless broadband.
IPTV will create new competition with cable, satellite
and over-the-air broadcast TV, promising lower prices
and new services. Muni wireless makes it possible for
local communities to add new broadband capabilities to
compete with DSL and cable broadband.
