“For over one hundred years, the public switched
telephone network has served our needs for
communications infrastructure in the United States,
reaching most of the population with a ubiquitous,
reliable, and easy-to-use telecommunications
technology. But today's networking communications
technologies can empower scientists, researchers,
educators, business people, policy makers, and
citizens with the ability to access, create and
distribute information much more powerfully and
quickly than ever before. Such empowerment represents
the true potential of the Information Age.” NSFNET
Final Report (1995), p. 4.

attendees of the UBS Global Media Week and
Communications Conference in New York this morning
that "We are not going to be in this particular

Yeah, WiMax is DOA in the USA, IP Democracy, 12/4/2007

WiMax, once a promising technology heavily promoted by
Intel as the next big thing, is DOA in the USA. Sprint
Nextel, the biggest U.S. telecom proponent of the
broadband wireless technology, is quickly unraveling
its commitment to WiMax in the wake of former CEO and
big WiMax booster Gary Foresee's ouster.

Verizon Embraces Google's Android, IP Democracy,
12/4/2007
Business Week has this piece today that talks about
"another sudden shift" at Verizon Wireless: the mobile
carrier will support Google's open mobile software
platform Android. In fact, as I suspected, Verizon's
about-face on open access is not really as sudden as
you might think.

Is DNS Redirection a Network Neutrality Violation? -
As usual, it depends who you ask...., DSLreports,
12/4/2007
We've been talking a lot lately about DNS redirection
services, which eliminate the traditional page not
found error and replace it with an ad-laden search
portal, so that ISPs can make a buck off of mistyped
URLs. Already in use by Cox, Charter and Earthlink, we
were the first to report that Verizon, Time Warner
Cable, RCN, Embarq and Insight broadband have also
just started using the tactic.

Comcast and “network management”, Susan Crawford,
12/4/2007
EFF’s recent report on the Comcast Affair [pdf] is
worth paying attention to. It’s a thoughtful and
easy-to-understand exploration of Comcast’s injection
of “reset” packets into online communications. (I
wrote briefly about this here.) EFF is also letting us
know how we can see packet spoofing for ourselves -
here.

The Impact of Comcast's BitTorrent Policy on Network
Neutrality, MTTLR, 12/4/2007
Imagine buying a train ticket from Ann Arbor to
Chicago. Imagine, also, that, upon arriving at the
train station, an attendant notices that you are
carrying a wheeled suitcase, well within normal size
limits. Without examining the contents of the bag, the
station attendant politely informs you that your trip
to Chicago has a new stopover -- in Texas.

FCC Chairman Now Under Attack by Democrats, IP
Democracy, 12/4/2007
However, this year Martin might have a more difficult
time mustering the bonhomie. Not only is he coming off
a brutal, botched and much-delayed Commission meeting
last week, his fellow Republicans are ticked off at
his attempts to regulate cable and now, it seems,
Democrats are angry about how Martin is running the
agency.

Under fire for inappropriate agency leaks and a war on

Kevin Martin is now the focus of a Congressional
investigation. At the heart of the inquiry is whether
Martin is abusing his authority and whether his
leadership has resulted in "a breakdown in proper
procedure at the FCC." From a letter sent to Martin by
