The most effective means of ensuring the government's
accountability to the people is an aggressive, free,
challenging, untrusting press. -- Colin Powell
OECD launches new broadband portal, Info and Comm
Policy, 11/7/2007
This portal provides a wide range of broadband
indicators on penetration rates, usage, geography,
prices, speeds and services. For example, the 221
million broadband subscribers in the OECD area spend
an average of USD 49 per month for broadband and
receive an average advertised connection of 13.7
megabits per second.

The Right to Whine :: Global Royalties, Inc., v
Xcentric Ventures, LLC, (DAR October 10, 2007),
Cybertelecom, 11/7/2007
The Good Samaritan provisions of Sec. 230 the
Communications Decency Act hold water over the water
where water means overseas international judgments
and where overseas in this case means the dirt road
leading north guarded by Canadian Mounties.

More Net Neutrality Violations, Open Left, 11/7/2007
I saw two separate stories last week on Verizon openly
violating the principles of open networks and
privileging its own content. Here's story one:

Bruce Owen on "Antecedents to Net Neutrality", PFF,
11/7/2007
Bruce Owen, one of the finest communications and media
economists of our generation, has written a powerful
piece for Cato's Regulation magazine asking, "After
the long fight to end the 'common carrier,' why are we
trying to resurrect it?" He's referring, of course, to
the ongoing efforts by some to impose Net neutrality
regulation on broadband networks. In his new article,
"Antecedents to Net Neutrality," Owen points out that
we've been down this path before, and with troubling
results:

George Ou on Comcast traffic management and NN, PFF,
11/7/2007
Must reading from George Ou of ZDNet on the Comcast
kerfuffle. (He benefits from a detailed exchange with
Richard Bennett, as I also did when Richard was kind
enough to join us for a TLF podcast on the issue two
weeks ago). George goes into great detail about what
is going on here and why it's so important that people
understand a bit about technology and network
engineering before rushing to impose regulation making
routine traffic management illegal. Ultimately, George
concludes:

Verizon DNS Redirection 'Service' Spreads - Consumer
Affairs: Is this a network neutrality violation?,
DSLreports, 11/7/2007
Verizon has been implementing a DNS redirection
service for select DSL and FiOS customers. The service
redirects users who mistype URLs to an Verizon-run
search page (complete with referral links) instead of
giving a traditional error message. While Verizon
insists the service was created to help users, it's
really just a revenue generator. In essence,
butterfingers create a revenue stream.

Sitting At Your Desk Not Good For Productivity?,
Techdirt, 11/7/2007
There's been plenty of back and forth on whether or
not telecommuting is a good idea, but a new study in
the UK seems to support a more flexible, mobile
workforce -- saying that employees who remain
deskbound all the time have their productivity stifled
and are much more prone to injury (
