250Mbps Over Copper? - Australian PhD claims
significant advancement
, DSLreports, 10/26/2007
The Melbourne Herald Sun says that an Australian PhD
student has devised a way of getting extra bandwidth
out of copper. Dr John Papandriopoulos, who is waiting
for patents to get processed on his technology, says
it could provide speeds up to 250Mbps over traditional
copper lines. The article, which offers scant
technical specifics, says the technology "uses
mathematic modeling to reduce the interference that
slows down downloading."

T-Mobile opens hotspots in S. California,
MuniWireless, 10/26/2007
T-Mobile is making its private Wi-Fi hotspot service
public in southern California counties affected by the
recent forest fires that have displaced about
half-a-million people. It is a generous move that,
hopefully, will enable displaced families to contact
worried loved ones and to use the Internet to find
help and identify resources.

Laguna Beach turns to Wi-Fi for fire watch,
MuniWireless, 10/26/2007
Wi-Fi continues to prove its mettle in the public
safety realm. After providing critical data to first
responders during the bridge collapse in Minneapolis
earlier this year, it is now being deployed in Laguna
Beach, California, as a way to monitor wild fire
threats with minimal threat to human life.

Here's the Low-Down on Comcast's P2P Policies, IP
Democracy, 10/26/2007
I caught up with a few senior executives at Comcast
this afternoon who talked with me about the growing
controversy surrounding the company's policy regarding
P2P traffic. Right off the bat, they pointed to a
follow-up article by Peter Svensson, the AP reporter
who last week propelled Comcast's purported blockage
of P2P uploads into the national spotlight.

ICANN Investigating Domain Name Front Running,
CircleID, 10/26/2007
ICANN is investigating complaints that insider
information is being used to snatch desired domain
names before an individual or business can register
them. The Security and Stability Advisory Committee of
ICANN termed the practice "domain name front running"
and likened it to a stock broker buying or selling
shares ahead of a client's trade, in anticipation of a
movement in price. In the case of Internet addresses,
many people who see a domain name available the first
time they check find it already taken by the time they
return to buy it. More...

ICANN as Fake Institution: WHOIS, Privacy and Credible
Commitment, IGP, 10/26/2007
When is a policy adopted unanimously in ICANN not
really a consensus policy? A: When the US Government
says it isn't. Case in point. A new top level domain
registry, TELNIC, has been authorized to run the .tel
domain. Their idea is that .tel will allow and
encourage individuals and corporations to manage a
universal identity on the Internet. If its idea works,
lots of ordinary people will register under the .tel
domain and combine their telephone numbers, email
addresses, and other identifiers. The company is based
in the UK.

WHOIS Redux: Demand Privacy in Domain Name
Registration, CircleID, 10/26/2007
Doc's post and the impending comments deadline for the
next iteration of ICANN's never-ending WHOIS saga
finally pushed me to write up my thoughts on the
latest iteration of ICANN debate. As Doc points out,
much of the current debate is very inside baseball,
tied up in acronyms atop bureaucratic layers. Small
wonder then that ordinary domain name registrants and
Internet users haven't commented much, while the fora
are dominated by INTA members turning out responses to
an "urgent request" to "let ICANN know that Whois is
important to the brand owners I represent"...

feet of raging mud water. At the time, I was

Senate Commerce Hearing Tackles Performance Royalties,
Future of Music, 10/26/2007
Yesterday, the Senate Commerce Committee held a
hearing on the Future of Radio. This hearing was set
up to address a range of issues -- LPFM, ownership,
royalties, public radio, etc -- but after a New York
Times article last week disclosed that FCC's Chairman
Kevin Martin was considering a fast track effort to
loosening media ownership rules even further, the
Senators also used this time to send a message to the
FCC, reminding the commission that a bi-partisan
majority had objected to the efforts to deregulate
media in 2003, and the Senate was ready to do so
again.
