Long Past Due for Broadband Maps, Cisco, 10/29/2007
During the years that we all have been debating
whether we have enough broadband or fast enough
broadband, one interesting little detail has always
been true -- we really don't know where broadband is
available nor do we know what speeds are available.
Remarkably, we've been flying blind in analyzing
broadband policy in the absence of this basic data.
Although the FCC provides some data on broadband
availability, it is universally recognized -- even by
the FCC itself -- that the data is inadequate. The FCC
data does not specifically indentify locations where
broadband is not available, nor does it differentiate
based on the speed of services.

Senators Raise Concerns about Content Blocking -
Asking for congressional inquiry into regulation,
DSLreports, 10/29/2007
There has been a lot of news lately about cable and
phone companies stifling (or, um, delaying ) costumer
communication. In addition to the traffic shaping
problem with Comcast, there have been consumer
complaints about AT&T s TOS (now changed) and Verizon
s temporary refusal to allow NARAL communication.
Apparently, this news is getting the attention of
politicians. Two senators have spoken out, asking for
a congressional hearing to investigate these reports.

Leaked Comcast Memo on Traffic Shaping - Customer
service rep was just doing her job, DSLreports,
10/29/2007
Earlier this week, we reported on an email received by
a Comcast customer in response to questions about the
company s traffic shaping practices. An internal
Comcast memo published by The Consumerist shows that
the customer service rep who called the issue a web
rumor was probably just trying to keep her job. The
memo shows the talking points that Comcast has said
employees are to use when asked about BitTorrent
throttling.

IPv6 Deployment: A Very Complex Time Bomb with an
Uncertain Trigger Date, CircleID, 10/29/2007
I did a 2 hour interview on October 23rd with John
Curran, Board Chair of ARIN the North American
Regional Internet Routing Registry for the last
decade. I now understand what is at stake with IPv6.
Outside of a key core group of network engineers I
think darn few people do understand.

The Fox News Channel has ordered the presidential
campaign of Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) to take down a TV
commercial using a clip of the candidate at a recent

FEMA fakes press conference (can you believe this?),
Lost Remote, 10/29/2007
This is stunning. On Tuesday, FEMA gave reporters a
15-minute notice that it was throwing a press
conference about its response to the California fires.
How it improved since Katrina. Because of the late
notice, reporters called in to a conference pool, but
there were also people in the audience who asked
questions to the man at the podium, Deputy
Administrator Harvey Johnson. Questions like, “Are you
happy with FEMA’s response so far?” Turns out, the
people in the audience were FEMA’s own public affairs
personnel!
