The Sky Is Not Falling, It's the Limit, IIA
Yesterday's NYT story on INSEAD's assessment of global
broadband deployment attempts to offer some balance to
the too-often hysterical debate over American
broadband promise and prowess. By looking at 68
variables, INSEAD purports to help policy makers and
community leaders understand the picture more
completely than other, allegedly narrower assessments.
We expect the usual suspects to praise INSEAD's work,
and the usual suspects to condemn it. We do neither.

The Internet's 'Black Holes' - University of
Washington studies the Internet's dark corners....,
dslreports
"At any given moment, a portion of Internet traffic
ends up being routed into information "black holes,"
says research from the University of Washington.
"These are situations where advertised paths exist to
the destination, but messages - a request to visit a
Web site, an outgoing e-mail - get lost along the
way." Since September 17, 2007, the Hubble Project has
operated continuously to find persistent Internet
black holes as they occur. Since the project started,
they've found 883,139 black holes and reachability
problems.

Overloading the Internet? Recent Media Reports Based
on Dangerous Misinformation, CircleID
The London Times article (and a similar one in the
Guardian) are based on dangerous misinformation. The
net isn't slowing down, and nearly no technical
experts believe major "overload" problems likely on
the backhaul, core, or decent local loop... Net
traffic per user, as documented by Odlyzko and Cisco,
has been growing at about 35-40% the last five years,
and that growth rate is flat and possibly down the
last two years. The net has been able to handle the
increase without price increases, much less overload,
because the primary and rate limiting equipment
(switches, routers, WDM, etc.) have simultaneously
been going down at a similar 35-40%. Moore's Law is
bringing costs down and capacity up at a remarkable
rate.

Subscribers to Cybertelecom News know that I am quote

which led me to wasting an entire evening uploading

Stolen Data So Plentiful, The Market For It Has
Collapsed, Techdirt
There are so many data leaks these days that it's
hardly even newsworthy every time some company reveals
your social security number and credit card. However,
would you believe that it's also impacting the
economics for fraudsters? Matt Bennett alerts us to
the news that the price of fraudulently obtained data
is falling through the floor thanks to the glut of it
on the market. There are so many collections of credit
cards or bank account numbers that the crooks who are
buying them are buying them in bigger batches at
greatly deflated prices. By the way, the falling
dollar has
