Family Ties Actress Weighs in on Future of the Net, IP
Democracy
No major Senate Commerce Committee hearing on the
Future of the Internet would be complete without
hearing from...Justine Bateman, who played Mallory
Keaton on 80s hit TV series "Family Ties." I got an
advanced look at the written testimonies of witnesses
who will appear before tomorrow's Future of the
Internet hearing and, yup, Justine Bateman is one of
the witnesses.
According to her written testimony (Word document
here), Bateman says there has been a decline in
Hollywood creativity since the repeal of the Fin-Syn
rules in the 1980s and as a consequence of increased
media consolidation.

Next Net Neutrality Steps at the CRTC, Michael Geist
Bell did not waste any time in responding to the
Primus net neutrality submission as it has called on
the CRTC to reject it. The next steps are fairly
clear - CAIP has been given until Monday to respond to
the Bell submission. With those submissions in hand,
the CRTC will rule on whether an injunction is
appropriate. If it declines the injunction request,
it will then address the broader throttling issue.
That could take months, though public pressure could
convince the Commission to accellerate the process
(which could include public hearings or submissions).
If you want your voice heard, the Campaign for
Democratic Media has made it easy to do so.

ICANN GNSO Votes to Kill Domain Tasting, CircleID
The ICANN Generic Names Supporting Organization has
had tasting on its agenda since last fall, with a
staff report issued in January, and a proposed
anti-tasting policy written in March. On Thursday the
17th, the GNSO put the proposed policy to a vote, and
it passed overwhelmingly. Under ICANN rules, the ICANN
board has to take up the resolution at its next
meeting, and since it was approved by a supermajority,
it becomes ICANN policy unless 2/3 of the board votes
against it, which in this case is unlikely. More...

CNN cyberattack called off, CW
Perhaps it's the 21st-century equivalent of the club
no one goes to because it's too crowded: The Chinese
hacker group that called for a denial-of-service
attack against CNN over the weekend called it off
because, they said, too many people knew about it.

Internet Hitting Full Capacity by 2010?, CircleID
Speaking at a Westminster eForum on Web 2.0 last week
in London, Jim Cicconi, vice president of U.S.
telecommunications giant AT&T has claimed, current
systems that constitute the Internet will not be able
to cope with the increasing amounts of video and
user-generated content being uploaded. "The surge in
online content is at the center of the most dramatic
changes affecting the Internet today," he said. "In
three years' time, 20 typical households will generate
more traffic than the entire Internet today.

AT&T Lobbyist Predicts Doom & Gloom, Clogged Internet
By 2010, Techdirt
We've noticed a nice little pattern. Whenever you hear
news reports about how the internet is getting clogged
up due to things like music downloading or YouTube or
video downloads, the claims are almost always from
consultants or lobbyists (or politicians who take
their cues from the lobbyists). But when you talk to
the actual technologists who understand what's
actually happening on the network, a very different
story emerges (even if those technologists work for
the telcos complaining about a bandwidth crunch). They
point out that there's no bandwidth crunch and the
impact of P2P traffic is overstated and that any
increase in bandwidth can be easily dealt with.
