Bell 1877 Advertisement: "The proprietors of the Telephone . . . are now prepared to furnish Telephones for the transmission of articulate speech through instruments not more than twenty miles apart . . . Conversation can easily be carried on after slight practice and with occasional repetition of a word or sentence. On first listening to the Telephone, though the sound is perfectly audible, the articulation seems to be indistinct; but after a few trials the ear becomes accustomed to the peculiar sound . . ."

Milpitas May Make Use Of Old Earthlink Wi-Fi Network -
Google to recreate Mountain View network in Milpitas, dslreports
Milpitas, California is one
of those small cities that was excited to get a citywide wireless network from
Earthlink a couple of years back and then had to agree to a return of the
network when Earthlink s plans collapsed earlier this year. When the city
accepted the network back, its plan was to use it solely as a municipal
network. However, a new agreement is pending which would once again offer free
wi-fi to about 7000 users per month. The agreement would allow for the
formation of a collaborative group called Silicon Valley Unwired which includes
the city, Google and I-Net Solutions (the group that provides Wi-Fi for
Mountain View in cooperation with

"The Promise of Municipal Broadband" & white spaces, Google
Free Press' Craig Aaron has written an excellent article on the current state of municipal broadband in the
United States. With the closing of Philadelphia's city-wide Wi-Fi project and
some similar networks started by local governments, municipal broadband has
gotten a bad rap publicly. But, as Aaron explains, it's a bum rap:

Fauquier County, Virginia issues RFP for countywide broadband network, Muni
Fauquier County. Virginia has
issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the creation of a county-wide
broadband network. Note: the network can be wired, wireless or both. Fauquier
County (pop. 63,000, largely rural) is in the north central Piedmont region of
Virginia, 40 miles southwest of Washington DC. It covers 660 square miles (1710
square kilometers). Although the county is not funding the network, it is not
requiring the provider to offer free access.

New Comcast Throttling System From Sandvine? - New
'protocol agnostic' solution simply software update for existing hardware…, dslreports
Sandvine Corporation, whose traffic shaping hardware sits at the heart of the Comcast P2P throttling
controversy, was considered one of the tech-sector's hottest companies just
last year. But the network neutrality fight, credit crunch and slowed earnings
have beaten down the company's stock. With Comcast moving to a "protocol
agnostic" solution (aka caps and over-use fees), is Sandvine's future in
doubt? Probably not. They've already developed a new "protocol
agnostic" software update for the exiting hardware:

The FCC’s Comcast/Net Neutrality Order & Commissioner McDowell’s Dissent, Tech Liberation Front
On Wednesday, the FCC released the decision (PDF, text) it adopted back on August 1 holding that
Comcast had violated the FCC’s 2005 net neutrality principles (PDF, text) by “blocking” peer-to-peer file-sharing traffic on its network using the popular
program BitTorrent. Paragraphs 3-11 lay out the FCC’s (still-disputed) finding of facts.

William Kennard, Obama for President Telecommunications Adviser, describes the FCC’s jurisdiction in the Comcast case as “murky” today on C-SPAN’s “The Communicators.” Kennard went on to say that enshrining net neutrality into law would be necessary to clear up this authority issue.

The FCC vs. Comcast: Who's Got the Most Marbles?, Ecommerce
Times Some two weeks after the FCC rebuked Comcast for its network management practices, the government agency has spelled out details of the cable provider's marching orders in a 67-page
supplement. Within the next 30 days, Comcast must make a full disclosure to the FCC of the behavior that lowered the regulatory oversight boom. That demand is likely to meet resistance from Comcast. "Here is what is going to happen," predicted attorney Jonathan L. Kramer: "[By Monday], I fully expect Comcast will go into federal court to block the FCC's enforcement of its
order."

Turns Out Disney Might Not Own The Copyright On Early
Mickey Mouse Cartoons, Techdirt
Remember the recent story we
had where some researchers noted that, despite the conventional wisdom (and
claims from Time Warner), it appeared that Time Warner probably did not own the
copyright on Happy Birthday? Of course, the company still collects millions for
it, because people assume they do, but the historical evidence suggests that
this is really incorrect. Now it turns out that the same thing may be true for
Disney's copyright on Mickey Mouse. This is rather noteworthy considering both
the history of Mickey Mouse, as well as how much effort Disney has always put
towards copyright extension just as the supposed copyright on Mickey Mouse was
about to expire.

AT&T Thanks Democrats For Telecom Immunity - In
private party in Denver crashed by Salon.com…, dslreports
There's a slew of private
corporate-sponsored parties occurring at this week's Democratic National
Convention in Denver, one of which was hosted by AT&T. AT&T is surely
eager to thank Democrats for recently getting them off the hook for handing
over American phone and data records to the NSA without a warrant. The move
saved AT&T from billions in legal penalties, as it kills lawsuits from the
likes of 22-year AT&T employee turned whistle blower Mark Klein -

Kiss net neutrality goodbye: AT&T is a major
presence at the Democratic Convention, Muni
The conventional wisdom among
my friends who are Net Neutrality fanatics is that a change of regime will
finally bring about tough net neutrality legislation, ushering in a Golden Age
of cutthroat competition in the US market for broadband services, leading to
faster speeds, lower monthly costs for Internet access, no throttling, no deep
packet inspection, no blocking of applications and so on.
