700 MHz Auction: D Block Panic, Damping Expectations,
And My Final Thoughts Before the Opening Bell., Tales
from the Sausage Factory
After so much pre-game hype, it's hard to believe we
have actually gotten down to the 700 MHz Auction week.
The fun and games will start January 24, although we
won't know (much) about the auction until it is all
over sometime in late February or...

Why AT&T's Plans To Filter The Internet Will Only Do
More Harm To AT&T (And Everyone Else), Techdirt
AT&T announced last summer that it was going to start
filtering traffic for copyrighted content -- so we're
still not entirely sure why many in the press seem to
think it was something new when discussed at CES a few
weeks ago. However, this new burst of attention has
many more people pointing out all the reasons this is
bad for AT&T itself. As we said, this seems to make no
sense at all, unless it's some bizarre attempt to come
up with an excuse to get rid of net neutrality.

Cyberlaw and cyberlawgs, EFF
Eric Menhart may call himself a cyberlawyer, but we
think he has a lot of learn about cyberlaw -- and
common sense. Menhart is the author of a blog about
cyberlaw issues called, logically if not innovatively,
"Cyberlawg." (As he says in the top right corner,
Cyberlawg = Cyberlaw + blog.) And he is "principal
attorney" in a firm called "CyberLaw P.C." OK, OK, we
get it, he practices technology law. Based on this,
hes applied for a trademark on the use of the term
cyberlaw in connection with the practice of, um,
cyberlaw.

release, users can choose from two calling plans,
starting at $30 monthly if you bundle:

Yahoo Poised to Pass Out Pink Slips, Ecommerce Times
Battered by slow revenue growth and the popularity of
social networking Web sites, Yahoo is poised to lay
off hundreds of workers, according to published
reports. The New York Times and The Wall Street
Journal have both reported on the slumping Internet
icon's cost-cutting plans, citing people familiar with
the matter. Precisely how many of Yahoo's roughly
14,000 employees will lose their jobs hasn't been
determined, the newspapers said. A final decision
could be announced Jan. 29.

Will Professor Craigslist Please Comment On The
Tribune's Decision To Drop Job Ads?, Techdirt
We've already seen newspapers blame Craigslist for the
various troubles they face (rather than recognizing
the problem is their own ability to adjust and adapt).
So it will be interesting to see how various
journalists react to the news that Craigslist is now
endowing a journalism professorship at UC Berkeley
with a few million dollars of its ample profits. And,
as an interesting contrast to that announcement, Marc
Andreessen points us to the news that the Chicago
Tribune has decided to give up printing job ads during
the week.

Anti-Spammer Fined For DNS Lookup Of Spammer, Techdirt
Anti-spam activists often need to do quite a bit of
hunting to track down the real identity of various
spammers. Over the years, spammers have become
increasingly adept at hiding from those trying to
shine light on their activities. However, when one
well-known anti-spammer used some standard whois and
DNS lookup tools (the same kind many of us use every
day) to find out the identity of a spammer, the
spammer sued him... and won!

Police Officers' Can Search Your iPhone Following
Arrest For A Traffic Violation, Techdirt
Adam Gershowitz writes "I am a criminal law professor
from Houston, Texas and I have recently finished an
article about the ability of police officers to search
the contents of a person's iPhone at a traffic stop.
In brief, under what is referred to as the "search
incident to arrest doctrine," police can search
through any container found on the body of a person
who has been arrested. It does not matter that the
arrest was for running a stop sign, or speeding, or
some other seemingly minor traffic infraction.
Regardless of the reason for the arrest, police can
search through every container on the person's body,

CIA Claims Cyberattacks At Fault In Blackouts,
Techdirt
A few years back, after a major blackout hit the
northeast, many people immediately assumed that it had
something to do with a terrorist attack on the
electricity system or perhaps a computer worm/cyber
attack. It turned out to be neither, but it wasn't
that surprising that people jumped to that conclusion.
However, afterwards, people began discussing how
likely it was that a cyberattack really could take out
the power grid for a city, and some people felt that
it was fairly unlikely to occur.

Cox Sued By Verizon For Patent Infringement - That win
against Vonage may have gone to their heads,
dslreports
Cox Communications is facing a patent infringement
lawsuit by Verizon which claims that the cable company
has violated eight of their VoIP technology patents.
Four of those patents are the same ones which were
being used by Vonage until Verizon won $120 million in
a similar lawsuit against the company. Some fear that
the win could have set a trend for Verizon to continue
going after other companies all throughout the year.
The industry is unsure as to why Cox is the sole focus
of this particular lawsuit since the same technology
is being used by other cable operators.
