When we are really honest with ourselves, we must admit that our lives are all that really belong to us. So it how we use our lives that determines what kind of men we are… Only by giving of our lives do we find life…. The truest act of courage, the strongest act of manliness, is to sacrifice ourselves for others. – Cesar Chavez

MetroFi Shuttering Citywide Wi-Fi Networks - Still looking for buyers ahead of June 20 D-day...., dslreports
MetroFi found that ad-driven free citywide Wi-Fi wasn't profitable, so they're shuttering deployed networks. The company has told the majority of the nine towns and cities they service (including California and Illinois) that they're shutting down the networks on June 20. From the California report, it appears that MetroFi's selling the networks for about $150 per node, if anybody's interested. "The angel lady will be happy," jokes article submittor Jon, in reference to one Illinois woman who is both an angel guidance consultant and warrior against the unproven health hazards of Wi-Fi. Portland's network is also on the market if you're interested in acquiring an unprofitable business.

Glenn Strachan on America’s wrong view of municipal Wi-Fi, Muni
Glenn Strachan has written an article about what he thinks is wrong with the US view of municipal Wi-Fi. While the title of his piece seems to focus on wireless, the article itself deals with America’s failings in broadband:

Lack of fiber backhaul delays Sprint’s WiMAX launch, Muni
If only US cities and regions had deployed fiber optic networks that were open to all providers, Sprint’s WiMAX deployment wouldn’t be in the pickle it’s in today. Fierce Broadband Wireless says: “Sprint, which was supposed to launch its Xohm network in April, is having difficulty finding high-capacity transport links to connect cell sites as typical T-1 lines that feed today’s mobile networks are inefficient for high-speed wireless broadband data. The problem is that the majority of Sprint’s sites today are T-1 lines, and there just isn’t a lot of fiber and microwave options available across the country. The link between the local area network and local fiber ring is still challenged by older technology and poor coverage, offering limited access to high-capacity connections.”

New York state attorney general said he successfully pressured ISPs to limit the Usenet newsgroups they would offer. That doesn't mean they're blocking access to third-party services.

Boy, Those Corn Farmers Sure Are Interested In Internet Politics, Techdirt
You may recall last summer, an NBC Universal exec tried to convince Congress that corn farmers were very, very concerned about movie piracy, coming up with an obviously laughable theory that more piracy would hurt corn farmers by having fewer people buy popcorn in the theaters (forgetting, of course, that people eat popcorn at home too -- and that popcorn isn't exactly a significant portion of corn farmer revenue these days). Anyway, it appears those "corn farmers" sure are busy when it comes

Cable Corn Farmer Sock Puppets Attack Google - Weirdest headline of the year award...., dslreports
Both cable and phone companies hire outside lobbying firms to make up completely bogus consumer groups to support their political positions. But they also frequently donate cash to minority, disability and other advocacy organizations in exchange for vocal political support for policies that, more often than not, aren't in constituents' best interest. The combined tactics make it appear to lawmakers and an uncritical press as if anti-consumer positions have broad consumer support.

No, The Internet Doesn't End In 2012, dslreports
I've had roughly a dozen people submit this report (slow to load) that claims Canadian phone companies Telus and Bell Canada are planning to start charging customers extra to access certain websites by 2012. Given Telus's previous history of blocking their customers from accessing websites Telus didn't agree with, and the fact their wireless service already essentially does this, it almost sounds plausible. However, despite making the front page of both digg (11,000 diggs at last count) and Reddit, I've seen nothing to substantiate any of the claims made by the report. In the report's own words:

Will a Global TAR make DNSSEC stick?, IGP
Two US Government contractors and the National Institute of Science and Technology have released a white paper, "Statement of Needed Internet Capability," detailing possible alternatives and considerations for a Trust Anchor Repository (TAR) to support DNSSEC deployment. Importantly, the document highlights policy choices, and raises interesting questions about a Global TAR as a solution for helping secure the DNS and the role of national security interests.

Yes, DMCA Safe Harbors Apply To Websites, Techdirt
Every once in a while, when discussing the DMCA's "safe harbors" someone shows up in the comments to insist that the safe harbors were never intended to apply to websites, but merely to ISPs. Tim Lee does a nice bit of work absolutely destroying that assertion, by pointing out how it doesn't make sense given the language of the law which clearly is designed to apply to websites as well as network providers (otherwise, as he notes, why would they ever suggest content would have to be "removed" rather than just "blocked").

Are High School Newspapers Obsolete?, Techdirt
When I was in high school years ago, I was both an editor for the school newspaper and a co-founder/editor of an "underground" newspaper that a group of friends put together to compete with the official school newspaper (it probably won't surprise folks to find out my first article for the underground paper was an examination of why an underground newspaper is perfectly legal and can't be prevented by a school administration). Both experiences were quite useful (and fun), but with so much talk these days of the challenges facing the normal newspaper industry, is it worth it for high schools to still publish newspapers? After all, these days, students who want to report on what's going on in a school no longer need the "sanctioned" press, thanks to the internet.
