"Man will never reach the moon regardless of all future scientific advances." -- Dr. Lee DeForest, Inventor of TV
Our High Speed Internet Service Gets Even Faster, Verizon
With all the talk about Verizon FiOS, we’ve also been revving up the speed of our copper-based High Speed Internet service. And we’ve been aggressively expanding it across our service territory. Since January of this year, Verizon has offered consumer broadband service with a download connection speed of up to 7 megabits per second, and we’ve been deploying this faster broadband to more and more customers. That 7 Mbps download High Speed Internet service is now available to more than 3.4 milli

AT&T and Verizon say FCC Net Neutrality principles work, CNET
Executives from AT&T and Verizon Communications say the FCC needs to show that its Net Neutrality principles can be enforced to keep future Net Neutrality legislation at bay.

Bit caps, consolidation, and Clearwire, PK
The news that Comcast, Time Warner, and AT&T are all considering capping use of their networks — so that “overuse” would trigger a charge — has prompted intense discussion of just why these network operators are moving in this direction. One camp suggests that these operators have to do something to manage congestion, and because any protocol-specific discrimination plan raises howls of protest from the Net Neutrality side of the fence adopting bit-usage discrimination schemes is inevitable. It’s the least-bad approach, following this view.

CRTC Raises Prospect of Major Net Neutrality Consultation, Michael Geist
One year ago, the telecommunications companies were seeking to downplay the importance of net neutrality. It would appear that the CRTC is not buying that anymore. In a speech to the 2008 Canadian Telecom Summit, CRTC Chair Konrad von Finckenstein had the following to say about the issue:

Verizon: Offering FiOS In AT&T Turf 'Logical' - 'I wouldn't call this a major attack on AT&T or anything like that...', dslreports
Last week I noted that for the first time ever, Verizon would be competing directly with AT&T by deploying FiOS into a portion of Texas already wired with U-Verse. The Dallas Morning News has more detail. "This is a logical thing for us," Verizon spokesman Eric Rabe says of installing FiOS in 60,000 homes in AT&T territory. "I wouldn't call this a major attack on AT&T or anything like that -- this is just taking advantage of an opportunity to sell to the rest of the town." I'd think Qwest is probably watching this with great interest.

We’re not dead yet: local investors save Philadelphia Wi-Fi network?, muni
Nothing is official yet but Philly news sources are reporting that a group of local investors will be taking over EarthLink’s municipal wireless network in Philadelphia. EarthLink wanted to shut down the network after failing to find a buyer. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the investors will offer free Wi-Fi service supported by advertising and charge local institutions (universities, hospitals) for secure citywide Wi-Fi access at a price. Philadelphia’s mayor is expected to make an official announcement today.

VoIP Trends Report, IP Convergence
Back in November of 2006 I posted on this blog some statistics about the our (Global Crossing’s) VoIP interconnections. We conduct interoperability testing for all the VoIP Interconnections that we establish today. This is similar to a "turn-up" procedure to ensure that our "voip stuff" talks nicely with our customer's "voip stuff". I like to think of this process as a value-add. We have a large and growing “SIP Trunking” suite of products. As a guy that is interested in technology in general, and also interested in trends I, once again, mined data points from interconnection testing.

VoIP providers to get full 911 access with bill's passage, Ars Technica
VoIP and 911 services haven't quite meshed in recent years. VoIP providers first had to work hard to bring 911 access to their services after gaining popularity, and now the Senate passed a bill that will require the telcos to stop blocking VoIP providers from their 911 networks.

Speeches: McCain and Obama, TV and the Internet, Peerflow
John McCain's speech in Kenner 3 June 2008 got truncated by the news media when they switched to Obama's speech that same night. The versions on YouTube reflect that problem, since they were made from TV. They also suffer from TV network labeling and chyrons chatting about the opposition.
