NYC Wireless Network Tackles Both Roadkill and Terrorism - Northrop Grumman's 'NYCWIN' network aids cleanup, safety...., dslreports
The New York Times notes that the city's new $500 million high-speed wireless secure data network can, among other uses, expedite the disposal of dead opossum. The city's NYCWIN network, built by Northrop Grumman, includes some 400 cellular antennas (see pic) covering 95 percent of the city, with nineteen city agencies developing about 53 unique applications for the UMTS-based network. State Technology Magazine has a bit more detail on the network's surveillance uses.

Wi-Fi Alliance Now Certifying Devices for Voice Over Wi-Fi Applications, CircleID
The Wi-Fi Alliance has announced today its plans to make voice a part of Wi-Fi networks, and has introduced a program to certify products. According to the Wi-Fi Alliance, the Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Voice-Personal stamp of approval means a product is capable of making or handling good-quality voice calls in the home or a small office environment. Car dealership sues consumer site over bad feedback, loses, Ars Technica
Nemet Chevrolet tried to sue ConsumerAffairs.com earlier this year due to what it considered to be defamatory comments made on the site by its users. The result was predictable: ConsumerAffairs.com is protected by the Communications Decency Act.

Judge rules in favor of site sued for comments, Lost Remote
It’s what many media folks are still worried about: what if someone posts a comment on our site that gets us sued? Well, a federal court has ruled that ConsumerAffairs.com can’t be held responsible for user comments that blasted car dealers. Very good news.

Another ISP Suspends NebuAD Trials - Centurytel suspends trials in face of Congressional inquiry…, dslreports
On the heels of Charter's decision last week to suspend their use of NebuAD user tracking ad technology, I'm seeing hints that CenturyTel may be doing the same thing. In addition to reworking their privacy page, the company is e-mailing customers who ask to inform them that plans to implement the gear have been "delayed." Carriers are concerned after Congress showed hints they could be investigating the technology because it potentially violates several Federal wiretap and privacy laws. From an e-mail to a subscriber:

Feds Ready for IPv6 D-Day, CircleID
On June 30, U.S. federal government officials expect to declare an early victory on the IPv6 front. But they admit that meeting their much-heralded June 30 deadline for IPv6 compatibility is just the opening salvo of a long-term battle to get their networks ready for the Internet of the future. Under a White House policy issued in August 2005, all federal agencies must demonstrate the ability to pass IPv6 packets across their backbone networks by this deadline

IPv6 and MEID's… Stop Choking on 32 Bits, CircleID
Both the Internet and North American cellphones are choking under a 32 bit limitation and reactions from protagonists involved in both cases offer striking similarities. 1983 saw the debut of IPv4 and North American mobile telephony started in earnest with Bell's analog AMPS (Advanced Mobile Phone Service). Responding to the need to uniquely identify the growing number of mobile devices in order to bill their owner, the FCC ordered that handsets be equipped with a unique identification number embedded on a chip. This became the 32 bit ESN.
