"If I had thought about it, I wouldn't have done the

said you can't do this." -- Spencer Silver on the work

The FCC's New Broadband Data Gathering: Even the
Deregulators Are Losing Patience., Tales from the
Sausage Factory
t is a delightful bit of timing that this piece on
European broadband comes the same day the FCC voted to
amend its broadband data collection for the annual
State of the Broadband Report. I'd say it was a
happy coincidence, except that there are so many
articles about how Europe is kicking our broadband
bottom these days that the odds were good someone
would publish something contrasting the growing
penetration (and associated economic benefits) in
Europe with the anemic growth in the U.S.

NJ city plans to cover itself with a wireless canopy,
Muni
Perth Amboy, a city in northern New Jersey just across
from New York Citys Staten Island, has struck a deal
to take the town wireless in an effort to economize on
the delivery of city services, according to a story in
the Home News Tribune. The city will be working with a
local integration firm known as the Breaker Group.
Unfortunately, the story did not provide many details
beyond a comparison of modern technology to Ben
Franklins discovery of electricity. No one is at the
city offices this weekend and we were unable to even
find a web site for the Breaker Group online. If
anyone can shed more light on this initiative, please
weigh in below with details. Well update you as we
learn more.

that municipal wireless has been failing just came

Bell Canada Throttles Wholesalers, Doesn't Bother To
Tell Them -, dslreports
Users of the Canadian family-run ISP Teksavvy (which
we profiled last year) have started noticing that Bell
Canada is throttling traffic before it reaches
wholesale partners. According to Teksavvy CEO Rocky
Gaudrault, Bell has implemented "load balancing" to
"manage bandwidth demand" during peak congestion times
-- but apparently didn't feel the need to inform
partner ISPs or customers. The result is a bevy of
annoyed customers and carriers across the great white
north. Says Gaudrault in our forums:

Verizon's FiOS Snakes Into Massive Manhattan Apartment
Complex, Ecommerce Times
Verizon's fiber-optic service, so far mainly available
to suburbanites, is making a big push into Manhattan
with a deal to connect an 11,232-unit apartment
complex. Stuyvesant Town and Peter Cooper Village, an
enclave of 110 buildings on Manhattan's East Side, is
the largest apartment complex in Manhattan and the
largest to get FiOS service anywhere in Verizon's
17-state fiber buildout area. Verizon Communications
announced the deal Monday, but seven buildings are
already connected. It will take some months to connect
the rest.
